What Does Non-Repeatable Tattoo Flash Mean? | Tattoo Artist in Manchester, CT
One thing I’ve realized over the last few months is that tattoo flash is quickly becoming one of my favorite ways to meet new clients. There’s just something really exciting about putting drawings out into the world and having someone say, “Yep, that’s the one.”
It’s honestly such an extra boost to my day when someone chooses a design that I’ve drawn.
The funny part is…some flash designs definitely become more popular than others. Before long, multiple people are asking for the same tattoo.
That’s why I try to keep most of my flash non-repeatable.
What Does “Non-Repeatable” Actually Mean?
This is probably one of the questions I get asked the most.
Does it mean I can never draw that subject again?
Not at all.
If that were the case, I think I’d eventually run out of things to draw…or my flash would get progressively weirder. (Although honestly, that sounds like a fun creative challenge.)
Instead, I think being non-repeatable is more about making sure every client ends up with something that feels like it’s truly theirs.
Maybe the colors change.
Maybe we add another flower or leaf.
Maybe we shift the flow of the design so it fits your arm, leg, or shoulder better.
Sometimes it’s a really small change, but those little adjustments make a tattoo feel personal while still keeping the original idea that made you fall in love with it.
Flash Can Be the Beginning of Something New
One of my favorite things is when someone brings me one of my flash pieces and says,
“I love this…but could we change this one little thing?”
Absolutely.
In my mind, you’ve already done the hardest part—you’ve told me you like my style.
That takes away a lot of the guesswork that comes with designing something completely from scratch.
Instead, I get to focus on the fun part: drawing.
Whether that’s adding another flower, changing the color palette, swapping out a leaf, or combining a couple of ideas together, flash often becomes the starting point for a collaboration instead of the finished product.
I love that process.
A Challenge for the Year
Here’s a random side quest that popped into my head while writing this.
What if I made a list of subjects to draw for the entire year and slowly worked them into my flash collections?
That actually sounds like a really fun challenge.

I can definitely see myself creating a collection of repeatable flash tattoos someday.
Sometimes people really love a design exactly as it is, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
But for now, I really enjoy making each tattoo feel just a little different.
Every tattoo tells someone’s story, and I like knowing that the artwork they leave with is uniquely theirs.
